Areas of research:
- Investigation
of chemical structure of alkaloids and their biological activity;
- Development
of scientific basis of the technology and analysis;
- Development
of modern preparations, acting on brain blood circulation, cough, growth
of cancer cells;
- Finding new application of alkaloids as syntons
in the goal-directed synthesis for revealing biological activity
Main results:
- 160
alkaloids were isolated and identified from plants, sprouting in Georgia;
- the
chemical structure of 25 alkaloids is determined for the first time.
- Local
plant Vinca minor L. is recommended for cultivation as a raw material for
preparations “Oxybral” and “Vincanor”.
- Alkaloids
“nervin” and “peganin” are offered as biological reagents.
Main
results are published in 1 monograph and 80 scientific publications

- New
technology of isolating biologically active compounds;
- Creation
of the native medicinal forms from the plant raw material;
- Development
of the methods for analyzing biologically active substances in plant raw
materials, medicinal preparation substances, finished medicinal forms, and
for controlling their production.
Main results:
- New
technology of obtaining pure tanins, alkaloids: colchamine, colchicine,
berberine; triterpene saponines of escine has been carried-out and
introduced into industry.
- New
technology of obtaining platiphyllin, securinine, tannin, saponin has been
worked - out.
- Native
medicinal forms with sedative activity are created.
Main
results are published in 130 scientific publications

Areas of research:
- Investigations on the effects of plant
substances on tissue regeneration, hemopoiesis, tumor growth and
corresponding cellular functions
Main results:
- Some specific receptors of serotonin and
its natural analogs were found;
- The adhesive properties and proliferative
ability of fibroblasts are enhanced under the influence of alkaloids of
some classes;
- Possibility to replace partially the
serum in the culture media with steroid and indolic alkaloids, such as
iervin, herbavin and peganin
- Possibility of application of natural
stimulators for neurohumoral control of hemopoiesis;
- Preparations leukobetin and leukofen were
developed for treatment of leucopenia;
- Lipid preparation helipol was developed
for application in combined treatment of surface-located tumors

of biologically active 5a-group steroidal compounds on the basis of
tigogenin;
Main results:
- Digidrotestosteron, the product of metabolic transformation
of testosteron has been synhesised;
- A
new method of the synthesis of the main component of anticancer propionate
medrosterone preparation on the basis of digidrotestosterone has
been established;
- 17
and 20 ketosteroidal hydrazones of 5a group have been synthesized;
- A
group of steroidal oximes of semi- and tiosemicarbasones has been
synthesised

- Developing the technologies for
production of medicinal preparation substances and finished preparations;
- Producing of biologically active
substances for chemical and pharmacological studies and clinical testing.
Main results:
- The following preparations and reagents developed at the Institute
are produced: Ramnil, Flaronin, Tribusponin, Colchicine, Caripazym,
Faciflogin, Rodopes, Askancol, Bentabol, Tigogenin, Teasaponin, Digitonin,
Frangula-Emodine, chemically pure tannin, chemically pure colchicine, and
medicinal standards.

Areas of research:
- Pharmacological correction of
central regulatory mechanisms;
- Investigations of the neurotropic
mechanisms of stress conditions;

inflammatory processes;
- Development of methods, special equipment
and software for applied pharmacology and physiology;
- Wide screening of biologically active
substances.
Main results:

14 drugs passed clinical verification and were validated by
Pharmacological Committee;
§
30 folk remedies were investigated for their
pharmacological properties and toxicity;
§
Several computer-aided devices for pharmacological
and physiological research were developed in cooperation with the Special
Construction Department of Georgian Academy of Sciences;
- 14
patents obtained from USSR and Georgia Patent and Invention Committee.
Main results are published in more than 180 scientific
publications.

Department of Phytocemistry
(established in 1960)
Area of research: Investigation of the substances of the following
chemical classes:
- anthraquinones;
- cardiac glycosides of cardenolide and
bufadienolide groups;
- coumarins;
- cycloartans;
- flavonoids;
- lectins;
- lipids;
- polysaccharides
- steroid and triterpene saponins;
- tannides;
- terpenoids.
Main results:
- The
preliminary analysis of 3200 plants was carried out;
- 350
species were subjected to thorough chemical investigation;
- About
600 individual substances were isolated from plants and classified.
Main
results are published in 11 monographs and 530 papers.

Department of Pharmacobotany

Areas of research:
- The investigation of the Georgian flora
with the aim to reveal the plants containing biologically active
substances (BAS);
- The study of areas and points of
distribution of important medicinal and technical plants;
- The determination of their natural and
operational resources;
- The study of folk medicine experience;
- The collection of plants for chemical
analyses and for obtaining medicinal preparations;
- The treatment of the herbarium materials.
Main results:
- The
Institute’s Herbarium includes 30.000 sheets describing 3300 species;
- There
were found significant resources of a lot of medicinal plants such as Digitalis
ferruginea and D. ciliata, Atropa belladona, Vinca herbacea, Cephalaria
gigantea, Leontice Smirnowii, Convallaria caucasica, Helleborus caucasicus
and H. abkhasicus, Tribulus terrestris, Ruscus ponticus etc.;
- The
standard technical documentation on the medicinal plants is created.
Main
results are published in 7 monographs and 250 papers.

Department of Technology & Medicinal Enzymology
(established in 1932)
Areas of research:
- The development of technologies for
production of medicinal substances and finished medicinal forms;
- Extension of the possibilities of
application of preparation Tikha-Askane, from Georgian bentonites, in
pharmacy, medicine, veterinary and cosmetics;
- Obtaining the enzymatic preparations and
investigating the enzymes of plant and microbial origin with the aim of
their application in medicine;
- The modification of the complex of papaya
proteases in order to improve their stability and pharmacological
properties
Main results:
- On
the base of Tikha-Askane there have been prepared emulsion- and
suspension-type ointments and dry ointment concentrates for treatment and
prevention of various diseases;
- New
receipts of the ointment bases have been worked out;
- The
standardization methods have been developed;
- The
technologies of obtaining berberine, colhamine, colchicine, etc. have been
developed;
- A
proteolytic complex – rimoprotelin was obtained and studied;
- From
the latex of Carica papaya introduced in Georgia, a complex of
proteolytic papain was obtained;
- The
technology of production of papain enzymes was developed and proteolytic
enzymatic preparation Caripazym was manufactured.
Main
results are published in 9 monographs and 143 papers.

Test Fields of Medicinal Plants
Shiraki Experiment Station of Medicinal Plants
Areas of research:
- Introduction and cultivation of the
promising medicinal plants, natural resources of which are limited;
§
Investigation of natural
properties, growth/development phenology and biometry of plants;
§
Establishment of
reproduction methods;
- Establishment of optimal feeding areas
and dates of fertilizing and herbicide introducing;
- Mechanization of labor-consuming works;
- Tests on the BAS content in the plants.
Main results:
- There
were introduced into culture the following medicinal plants:
-
Yucca gloriosa - the source
of tigogenin, which is a raw material for the synthesis of steroid hormonal
preparations;
-
Tribulus terrestris, the natural raw material for atherosclerosis
preparation Tribusponin;
-
Astrasgalus falcatus,
the raw material for antiuremic preparation Flaronin;
-
Vinca herbaceae, Vinca minor and Leontice Smirnovii,
which are producers of indolic and quinolizidic alkaloids.
- The
plantations of the following medicinal plants were laid out: the garden
sage, marigold, spearmint, camomile, flax, fennel, castor-oil plant,
ragwort, Ruscus ponticus, and Leonurus quenq.

Kobuleti Experiment Station of Medicinal Plants
Areas of research:
- Introduction and cultivation of tropical
and subtropical plants of foreign origin in Western Georgia;
- Agricultural recommendations on rare
medicinal species;
- Establishment of optimal conditions of
medicinal plants harvesting, drying and processing;
- Work out the plant protection measures
and the methods of mechanization of labour-consuming works;
Main results:
- For
the first time in the former Soviet Union, about 40 species of important
medicinal plants were introduced into culture. At first, these were the
following plants: the bark tree, camphor-wood, sea onion, camellia and
oleander, Eucommia, Gamphocarpus; later: aloe, Java tea, kalanchoe,
witchnut, lance-leaved night shade, corkwood, Passiflora, Vinca rosea,
Rauvolfia, Dioscorea, Stephania, and Arvalentana; for last 10
years: cephalaria, Japanese sumac, cyclamen, lungwort, Centela asiatica,
etc.
- There
were determined the areas and natural and operational resources of
industrially important wild medicinal plants growing in Western Georgia.
Instruction Manuals on their harvesting, drying and processing were worked
out.
